Fun with Physics
When you first step foot in our science center, you’ll be greeted by some of our most hands-on exhibits which should please both the young and young at heart. From mechanics to aerodynamics, from properties of waves to the force of gravity, Fun with Physics will get your body moving and brain thinking.
Space and Space Exploration
Today’s students may be the astronauts of the future. Learn about the inspiring career of pioneering El Pasoan, Danny Olivas, who has visited the space station. Journey through our Solar System and imagine what space discoveries lurk just around the corner. You will be in awe of how much we have learned in recent years!
Earth: Pole to Pole and Deserts Between
Rock, wind, and water shape this Earth and the life on it. See how the geology and climate of a region impact the life that lives there. Play with ecosystems and try to figure out where some of our favorite animals live – and what forces have influenced their adaptive traits. Visitors will also uncover what El Paso has in common with the North and South Poles.
In El Paso, we do not have to prepare for many of Mother Nature’s feats… or do we? Learn about natural disasters such as Earthquakes, Tsunami’s, Tornado’s, Volcanos and Floods as we consider the growing impact of these natural events and how we as human can build our resiliency to their effects.
Young Scientists at Work
Cultivating tomorrow’s critical thinkers starts with the type of play we do today. Parents and children can indulge their curiosity and spark their imaginations in our classroom geared specifically toward the youngest learners (ages 6 and under), who can connect with our major exhibits in a more age-appropriate setting. Here, kids can be a lab technician mixing water colors, operate on a doll in the ER, blast off into space, or explore field sciences by using the five-senses.
Where does our energy come from? In El Paso, the answer(s) may surprise you. In this electrifying room, visitors will find their curiosity ‘sparked’ thanks to the boldness of Tesla. They can further learn about energy ranging from fossil fuels to renewable resources through interactive stations. Those who like to ‘tinker’ will also find some opportunities to practice their circuitry skills.
Tales told by Trees
Have you ever wondered how old a tree is? Come study a cross-section of our largest tree, and see what you can read ‘between the lines.’ Visitors will enjoy the conversations sparked by our Dendrochronology exhibit as they sit down to relax in our gift shop.
Who do we count on when we’re in need, and how to do they protect themselves? Firefighters, soldiers, police and paramedics have many tricks up their sleeves to not only reach us quickly, but to keep as many people safe as possible in the process. See what technologies are developing to support these lifesavers and peace-protectors.
Illuminating Light and Lenses
Just what is happening when we use our sense of sight? Are we really seeing what we think we’re seeing? And what other properties of light are we ‘overlooking?’ Explore your sense of vision and learn how light moves and interacts with the world around us to not only bring us vision, but to bring this planet to life.
Technology Through the Years
Would you believe that simple things you have in your desk at home, like a pen, were once unwelcome forms of technology? Join us on a journey through time as we learn more about technology and how it has evolved over time. We will follow the evolution of transportation, communication, music and computers into the future, where we consider cutting edge technologies and their uses.
