Slimed for Science

While the slimed for science campaign has ended, the need, mission, and fundraising continues… please read below for a few of the reasons we so fervently pursue a permanent STEM Center for El Paso.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is this fundraiser for?

This campaign began as a way to lay the financial foundation for a new, high-tech STEM-education center for the community of El Paso. Our private organization, Insights El Paso Science Center, has evolved over the past three decades – amidst several major moves – to continue serving our region. Our most recent move (please see the About Us page), has given us the opportunity to reflect upon our role and the bigger picture in our region. It is clear to us that we need to start afresh, with a ground-breaking effort to launch a state-of-the-art STEM education facility that can effectively serve the diverse people of our city and the neighboring counties. As the 19th largest city in the country, El Paso is the only one in the top 25 without a dedicated science or natural history facility – and we’re out to change that.

As a result of this realization, we also began to think about math and science education in this country. In the United States, these subject have a negative reputation. Most people have a negative connotation with these topics whether it is due to their own learning experiences, politics, or complex social systems. If we take a moment and think about what STEM fields do for us, however, we often overlook the remarkable and life-enhancing discoveries made possible through STEM pursuits. Just think about the ones you love… has anyone’s health or life been saved due to advances in modern medicine? Or about the many soldiers who have highly functioning prothestic limbs thanks to engineering. Or the increasing efficiency of our electronic devices and transportation systems.

The bottom line is that our STEM endeavors have the power to enhance our daily lives and even save those we love.

So our campaign has evolved from one designed to crowdsource El Paso for support of a Science Center to one aimed at shifting the public perception and support of STEM education in this country.

Why Slimed for Science?

One day, our director was sitting in the office trying to come up with innovative ways to raise money. She somewhat jokingly said to the Administrative Assistant, “What is the science version of the ice-bucket challenge?” After brainstorming a few thoughts, she said “Slime!”   At this moment, the joke turned a bit more serious and our team started talking with other stakeholders to see what their thoughts were about this plan.

Was it feasible? Is it too much of a copy-cat to take hold? Would the public embrace this?   Could we get the community to “geek out?”

Our Director looked into the origins of the Ice-Bucket challenge to learn more… and she was surprised to discover that it did not begin with donations to ALS – but that it caught on like fire and benefited so many deserving organizations around the world! See the story here…     The bottom line, is that the power of social networks created a platform for millions of people to support organizations they believe in – and that is a beautiful thing.

The more we thought about it, the more we began to get that special tingling sensation that we mightb just be on to something powerful. We also began to realize that this movement could be about more than just our organization. And so, with a little bit of fear, but a great deal of excitement, we began to strum up support for STEM education from our friends in the community and beyond.

What is STEM?

STEM stands for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The fields work together and often overlap, but they are pivotal to the future of our way of life and the evolving careers of tomorrow.
